7 Essential Traits of Cat-Lover Couples
In the wise words of Sigmund Freud, “time spent with cats is never wasted”. We couldn’t agree more!
Being a cat parent is a unique experience, with those cute nose twitches, warm fluffy nuzzles, and deep purrs of contentment making it well worth our while.
Even though they’re cats, our fur babies are usually at the top of our list of favourite people! They’re our family, and a lifestyle.
And while every cat (and human) is different, we cat owners can find common ground and understand one another - which is why we flourish together when it comes to dating and relationships.

1. We’ve nailed responsibility
It’s all relative! If we can lovingly care for our cats, then we can sure as heck express love in human relationships with that same abundance of warmth and sensitivity, too. We’d have our own dinner late so that our kittens can have their regular chow time slot. They can’t be going hungry a second longer, can they?
And when our partners are also cat owners? Well, the key to the best romances are sugarcoats of reciprocated care and affection.
It’s in the stats, folks! A study by the University of Buffalo found that couples with pets had closer relationships and responded more healthily to stress than couples who didn't!
2. We’re both independent and driven
Much like our cats, we enjoy being independent and standing out from the crowd. We don’t mean we’re all wandering around our flats all day in pyjamas playing with balls of yarn, we mean we’re self-reliant, ambitious, and determined to reach our own goals.
Do we naturally mirror our feline friend? It sure looks like it - and we’re proud to do so! When it comes to romance for us, we look for partners who can respect our boundaries and support our life goals, because we’ll always do the same for them!
3. We love to snooze
Would you believe (ok… we’re sure that you will) that cats spend an average of 16 hours a day asleep, which is almost 60% of their lives?
Let’s face it: cat owners or not, we humans are always catching an extra 40 winks whenever we can! But living with a cat allows us to witness the art of daily rest in all its glory. It’s hard for us to resist the temptation to nap more frequently ourselves.
Picture this. So… a showery Friday night, do we: a) Have a late night on the town with our colleagues after work; or b) Head home and snuggle up on the couch with our kitties… and a fellow kitty loving partner. We are all about this kind of relationship - sign us UP.
4. We’re intellectually curious
You know what they say about getting plenty of sleep - it powers your brain. 🧠 In a Wisconsin University study, scientists found that ‘cat people’ scored higher on intelligence tests than those who preferred other animals! Bragging rights, much? But while we’d love to boast that this proves that we’re genetically smarter than our dog-loving pals, this may not necessarily be the case. Instead, it’s likely our innate curiosity inspired by our feline friends is the source of our thirst for knowledge.
5. We're always bursting with pride
There’s nothing quite as heartwarming as watching our kittens gain more confidence and overcome their fears as they blossom into the wonderful cats they’re capable of being. As proud kitty parents, even the smallest things are big accomplishments if our furball did it, and our patience with them is unrivalled. It doesn't matter if we've witnessed that same trick 1,000 times, we're just as super excited with a bounty of treats in hand whenever they do it.
It’s amazing when we can revel in the romantic company of those who are just as proud of them as us. Talk about something to bond over! And who would we rather hang out with more than someone who appreciates every single photo of our beloved pet and genuinely enjoys flicking through our dedicated photo albums? We love to send our hilarious cat pics to them throughout the day, and feel all gooey inside from their reaction replies.
6. We’re gushing softies
Cuteness comes effortlessly and around-the-clock to our kitties! Who can blame us for melting in those little faces and speaking in a high-pitched voice when their adorable behaviours are on overload?
It doesn’t matter if what we’re saying is utter gibberish because we know they get it. Dating a fellow cat-lover who can join in with our ‘goochy, goochy, goooooos’? No judgement. Total understanding... Result.
7.We're not scared of proper commitment
Having a cat is a purrrrrfect way to evaluate a partner's romantic investment and level of potential commitment. The way a person cares for a pet may be a sneak peak into a long-lasting, loyal future with you.
Introducing your new flame to the parents? Pfffft - please! We only know where we really stand with a relationship when we’ve introduced them to our kitties. Now this means things are serious!
Wrapping up…
Being able to share our biggest passions brings true magic into romantic relationships - and when it comes to magnetic characteristics that shine out of us cat lovers, we’ve got those special qualities to form a couple’s bond like no other.
